Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the far north of Finnish Lapland, the Muonio River Valley Nature Reserve conserves a pristine section of the Muonio River and its surrounding forested valleys. This nature reserve spans the border region between Finland and Sweden, encompassing a landscape characterized by old-growth boreal forests, wetlands, rocky outcrops, and the fast-flowing Muonio River, one of the key tributaries to the Torne River system. The reserve's ecological importance lies in its diverse habitats supporting species like brown bear, wolverine, lynx, and numerous migratory and resident bird species. The river valley provides spawning grounds for salmon and trout, making it a popular destination for anglers. Historically, the lands around the Muonio River have been traditionally used by the Sámi people for reindeer herding and fishing. Today, visitors come to experience a remote wilderness with well-marked hiking trails, cross-country skiing routes in winter, and opportunities for wildlife viewing. The reserve is noted for its quiet and unspoiled environment, offering solitude and connection with subarctic nature. Key recreation includes hiking along varied terrain and paddling stretches of the Muonio River.
