Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area is a 21,000-acre lake and surrounding land located in Bell County, Texas, about 10 miles southwest of the city of Belton. Created by a damming of the Leon River, the lake serves flood control, water supply, and recreation purposes. The area’s landscape features gently rolling hills, oak woodlands, cedar brakes, and open grasslands. This diverse habitat supports a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, migratory birds, and abundant fish species such as largemouth bass and catfish. The history of the lake dates back to the completion of Belton Dam in 1954 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Today, the outdoor recreation area attracts visitors year-round for boating, fishing, camping, hiking, and horseback riding. The park includes multiple developed campgrounds, day-use picnic areas, boat ramps, and miles of multi-use trails that offer views of the lake and surrounding hills. Birdwatchers find ample viewing opportunities especially during migration seasons, while anglers enjoy well-stocked waters. Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area is a valuable community resource offering both peaceful natural settings and active outdoor recreation close to urban centers. Families, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts all find activities to enjoy, from paddle sports on calm waters to hiking scenic hillsides. Facilities and trails are well maintained, making it accessible for casual visitors and experienced adventurers alike.
