Located in County Sligo in the west of Ireland, the Ox Mountains/Benbulbin Complex SAC encompasses a range of striking geological features including the iconic Benbulbin table mountain and the rugged Ox Mountains. This Special Area of Conservation protects a mosaic of habitats such as upland heath, calcareous grasslands, and blanket bogs, which support diverse flora and fauna. The distinctive karst limestone landscape is home to rare plants like alpine clubmoss and surrounding habitats shelter birds including peregrine falcons and merlins. Historically, the area is imbued with cultural significance; Benbulbin itself is linked to ancient Irish legends and is an iconic symbol of County Sligo. Outdoor enthusiasts flock to the region to hike its numerous trails that offer panoramic views over Sligo Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, as well as opportunities for birdwatching and botany. The rugged terrain and relatively low visitor numbers provide a sense of wilderness and tranquillity.
