Lough Gill Special Protection Area (SPA) is an internationally designated site located primarily in County Sligo with parts in County Leitrim, in the northwest of Ireland. It encompasses the large freshwater lake of Lough Gill, its surrounding wetlands, bogs, and woodlands. Geographically, the lake is nestled between rolling hills and is renowned for the scenic vistas it offers, combining calm water, reedbeds, and islands. Ecologically, the site supports diverse habitats including oligotrophic waters, wet woodland, and transition mires, which provide essential breeding and wintering grounds for a variety of migratory and resident birds. Key species protected here include the Greenland white-fronted goose, whooper swan, and other waterfowl. The area is also noted for its population of rare plants and aquatic life, contributing to its high conservation value. Historically, Lough Gill is linked to Irish literature and folklore, notably the works of poet W.B. Yeats, who referred to the lake in several poems inspired by the enchanting landscape.
