About Great Valley Grasslands State Park

Great Valley Grasslands State Park preserves one of the last remnants of the vast native grasslands that once dominated California’s Central Valley, offering visitors a rare glimpse into this unique ecosystem and excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and hiking.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Great Valley Grasslands State Park is located in San Joaquin County, California, near the cities of Los Banos and Patterson. Comprised primarily of native grasslands and riparian habitats, the park protects one of the largest remaining tracts of California’s once-extensive Central Valley grasslands, an ecosystem that has been greatly diminished by agriculture and urban development. The gently rolling plains support a diverse array of grasses, wildflowers, and seasonal wetlands which are critical for migratory birds along the Pacific Flyway. Visitors to the park can enjoy hiking on gentle trails, birdwatching, and observing native wildlife including tule elk, ground squirrels, hawks, and a variety of songbirds. Historically, these grasslands were used by local Native American tribes and were later grazed by ranchers; today, the park safeguards this ecological and cultural heritage. The park offers an educational experience about grassland ecology and conservation efforts. The landscape is largely open with marked trails that wind through native vegetation, providing peaceful solitude and a chance to connect with a rarely preserved California ecosystem. Seasonal wildflower displays in spring add to the scenic value, while cooler weather months attract birdwatchers. The Great Valley Grasslands State Park is a significant refuge for native species reliant on grassland habitat and an important site for environmental research and restoration projects. Visitors appreciate the accessibility, relatively flat terrain, and quiet natural surroundings for picnicking, hiking, and photography.
