About San Augustine State Park

San Augustine State Park offers a peaceful retreat in East Texas, showcasing dense Piney Woods forests, hiking trails, and opportunities for camping and wildlife observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

San Augustine State Park is located in San Augustine County in East Texas. Occupying over 500 acres, the park is distinguished by its expansive stands of loblolly pines and hardwood trees typical of the Piney Woods region. The park's terrain is relatively flat with gentle slopes and a rich understory of native shrubs and ground cover. Established in 1934, much of the park's infrastructure and landscape improvements were developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s, lending it historical significance. Visitors can enjoy more than 3 miles of hiking trails through shady forests, providing excellent opportunities to observe local wildlife such as white-tailed deer, various bird species, and small mammals. The park features a peaceful lake, which is ideal for fishing and paddle sports. Several picnic areas, a playground, and an interpretive nature center enhance the visitor experience. San Augustine State Park is one of the few parks that preserves the East Texas forest ecosystem and offers a restful outdoor setting away from crowded tourist areas. The park appeals to campers seeking quiet tent or RV sites and day visitors looking for hiking and wildlife photography opportunities. Seasonal wildflower blooms in spring add to the park’s visual appeal, while fall brings lovely foliage colors. The combination of natural beauty, historical elements, and outdoor recreation makes San Augustine State Park an inviting destination for nature enthusiasts in Texas.
