About Connecticut River Watershed

The Connecticut River Watershed is the largest river basin in New England, offering diverse outdoor activities along its extensive waterways and surrounding forests.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Connecticut River Watershed covers approximately 11,250 square miles across four states: Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. It is defined by the Connecticut River, which flows southward for 410 miles from the Canadian border to Long Island Sound. The watershed includes numerous tributaries, wetlands, forests, and floodplains, creating critical habitat for a wide range of plant and animal species, including migratory birds, fish, and aquatic mammals. Geographically, it encompasses lowlands, rolling hills, and mountainous terrain, particularly in the northern and western regions. The watershed plays an important role in regional water supply, flood control, and environmental conservation. Historically, it has been central to commerce and settlement since colonial times and features many historically significant towns and landscapes. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking, paddling, fishing, wildlife viewing, and cycling along the river and its surrounding forests and protected areas. Popular spots include the Connecticut River Byway, several wildlife refuges, and tributary sites like the Westfield and Deerfield Rivers. The watershed also supports recreational paddling on the nationally designated Wild and Scenic Rivers segments and provides accessible natural spaces for urban and rural populations alike. With extensive river mileage and connected trails, it offers an accessible outdoor experience rich in natural and cultural resources.
