Bayou Paul Wildlife Management Area

Bayou Paul Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located in Assumption and St. James Parishes in southern Louisiana. Spanning thousands of acres of rich wetlands, swamps, and bayous, this managed area provides critical habitat for numerous fish, migratory birds, and other wildlife species. The landscape primarily consists of freshwater marshes interspersed with bald cypress swamps, hardwood forests, and slow-moving waterways such as Bayou Paul itself, from which the area takes its name. Historically, this region supported traditional hunting and fishing communities and continues to offer excellent outdoor recreation, especially waterfowl hunting, largemouth bass fishing, and paddling excursions. The Bayou Paul WMA is managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to balance wildlife conservation with public use. Hunting seasons attract waterfowl and deer hunters while birdwatchers and photographers benefit from the area's diverse bird species, including egrets, herons, and migratory waterfowl.
