Muscle Ridge Wildlife Area comprises a collection of offshore islands and coastal habitats situated off the coast of Hancock County, Maine. The area spans over 6,700 acres of protected land and water, providing critical habitats for numerous bird species, marine life, and native plants. The topography is marked by rocky islands, forested uplands, salt marshes, and intertidal zones that create a rich ecological environment. Established primarily to conserve important seabird nesting grounds, Muscle Ridge is home to species like the common eider, great cormorant, and various gulls, attracting bird watchers and naturalists. The Wildlife Area also supports striped bass and Atlantic salmon in surrounding waters, making it an appealing site for fishing enthusiasts. Recreation within the area centers on hiking along coastal trails, paddling through calm bays and saltwater coves, and wildlife viewing during migratory seasons. Unlike larger parks, Muscle Ridge offers a quieter, more remote experience with limited amenities and emphasizes low-impact activities. It is managed with a focus on preserving natural habitats while allowing public access for outdoor education and appreciation.
