Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the Bilaspur and Anuppur districts of Chhattisgarh, Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary spans across the Maikal Hills, part of the Satpura mountain range. Established in 1975, this sanctuary covers dense forests primarily composed of mixed deciduous and sal (Shorea robusta) trees. Its geography includes rugged hills, plateaus, and valleys, contributing to diverse habitats that support a wide array of wildlife including Bengal tigers, sloth bears, gaur, chital, sambar deer, and many species of birds and reptiles. It forms a critical part of the Achanakmar-Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve and shares a boundary with Madhya Pradesh's Kanha Tiger Reserve, facilitating wildlife corridors.
