About Hail Haor Wildlife Sanctuary

Hail Haor Wildlife Sanctuary is a wetland sanctuary in northeastern Bangladesh, known for its critical role as a habitat for migratory birds and diverse wetland species.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Hail Haor Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Sylhet Division of Bangladesh and encompasses one of the largest natural wetlands in the region. This wetland system covers a mosaic of open water, marshes, paddy fields, and riverine forests, playing a vital ecological role in flood control and groundwater recharge. The sanctuary was officially declared in 1983 to protect the wetland ecosystem and its abundant wildlife. Its waters and surrounding vegetation serve as wintering grounds for tens of thousands of migratory birds, including various species of ducks, geese, storks, and cranes that arrive each year from Siberia and Central Asia. The sanctuary also supports a diverse array of fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals adapted to wetland habitats.

Visitors to Hail Haor can enjoy birdwatching during peak migration periods from November to March, witnessing spectacular concentrations of waterfowl and other migratory species. The sanctuary is also popular for nature photography, small boat tours, and local cultural experiences with nearby fishing communities. Although it is not a developed visitor destination with extensive trails or campgrounds, Hail Haor's tranquil natural setting offers a quiet refuge for eco-tourists and researchers alike. Conservation efforts focus on balancing traditional livelihoods with habitat preservation, particularly managing the wetland for sustainable fishing and limiting habitat loss. The sanctuary represents a significant protected area in Bangladesh’s network of wetland reserves, contributing to global biodiversity conservation for migratory birds and endangered aquatic species.
