Te Wahipounamu (Place of Greenstone) is a World Heritage site located in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island. Encompassing almost 10% of New Zealand’s total land area, it features spectacular landscapes ranging from the Southern Alps, dense temperate rainforests, glacial valleys, to the rugged coastline of Fiordland. This area is an ecological wonderland, home to unique and ancient species such as the kea, one of the world's few alpine parrots, and the rare Takahe bird. Historically, the area is rich with Maori cultural significance, being a traditional source of pounamu or greenstone.
