Outing Highlights
Glacial-blue river framed by alpine ridges
From the first strokes you float beneath Cecil Rhodes Mountain and Slaughter Ridge as the Kenai’s glacial water tumbles out of Kenai Lake — a corridor of stark peaks, river birds, and long, silent shoreline vistas.
Birds and river mammals on the move
Guides point out Bald Eagles at large nests and keep watch for river otters, beavers, and the occasional moose or bear as you float the upper river.
A calm float with a few playful rapids
The route includes a couple of minor Class I–II “whooptidoo” rapids and long stretches of quiet current — scenic rather than technical, designed for relaxed viewing and conversation.
What the day feels like
What the two-hour float feels like
The trip is a gentle 7-mile drift that begins at Drifters Lodge just below Kenai Lake and finishes at the confluence where the Russian River meets the Kenai. Guides outfit the group, narrate the valley’s geology and biology, and keep the pace leisurely so passengers can watch the shoreline and ask questions as the river widens and narrows through miles of scenery.
