Outing Highlights

THE WAVES

Consistent offshore swell with swift mood swings

Hatteras sits far offshore from the mainland and picks up more consistent swell than much of the U.S. East Coast—yet conditions can flip quickly, so the best days are often the ones you seize at a moment’s notice.

THE GEAR

Soft boards for beginners; hard boards for progression

If you’ve never surfed or have only a few sessions under your belt, a soft board is recommended: they have a hard epoxy core with a soft padded shell that reduces the risk of injury. Riders who can consistently stand and work turns will find a hard board offers better performance.

THE RENTAL BASICS

Flexible exchanges and clear damage policy

You can return to the shop to swap boards if conditions change; if the replacement is pricier you pay only the difference. All off-site rentals require a credit-card hold at pick up and boards are inspected at both pick up and drop off to determine liability for damage.

What the day feels like

What a week on the water feels like

For seven days you live on swell watch—checking forecasts, driving to the favored breaks, and staying ready to surf when the ocean lines up. Days can alternate between perfect, unpredictable peaks and softer surf; the rhythm is one of vigilance and reward: when Hatteras is good, it’s often exceptional.

Frequently asked questions

Planning Your Outing

What type of board should I get?

If you have never surfed before or have only surfed a few times a Soft Board is recommended: they have a hard epoxy center with a soft padded shell that reduces the danger of getting hit by your board. Soft boards sacrifice some performance; if you can consistently stand up and are beginning to learn turns and maneuvers a hard board may be more suitable.

What if the conditions change and I need a different board?

You can return to the store and exchange your board for a different model or size. If the new board is more expensive to rent, you pay the price difference.

What happens if I break or damage the board?

The renter and a store employee inspect the board at pick up and again at drop off. If the board sustains major dents, buckles, cracks, broken fins, or other substantial damage during the rental, the renter must pay repair costs and depreciation or replacement costs if the item is beyond repair. HISS Inc. does not profit from damage charges—costs are to recoup losses from a depreciated product.

Is there a security deposit or hold?

A credit card hold of $250 will be placed for all off-site rentals during pick up and will be released at drop off provided no damage has occurred.

Who operates the Surfboard One Week Rentals?

The rentals are operated by Hatteras Island Surf Shop.
