Paddle the Lahn: A flexible day trip from Runkel beneath castle walls.
Set off from the boat slip at Runkel and let the Lahn unfold: a largely placid river corridor lined with meadows, villages and a handful of engineered features such as the single lock on the main route. The tour is deliberately flexible—you paddle at your own pace, choose whether to finish in Limburg or extend to Diez, and take in riverside sights like Kerkerbach, Steeden and Schloss Dehrn along the way.

Outing Highlights
Bootsslip Runkel — an atmospheric launch beneath the burg
The tour begins at the boat slip directly beneath Runkel’s castle and beside the historic Lahn bridge and old town, a memorable and scenic place to put in your boat.
Quiet reaches and pastoral banks
Much of the route runs through tranquil, nature-filled stretches of the Lahn framed by meadows and pastures—ideal for relaxed paddling, photography and absorbing the riverside landscape.
Historic villages, Schloss Dehrn and the Limburg lock
Paddlers pass Kerkerbach, Steeden and Dehrn—where Schloss Dehrn dominates the skyline—and experience the single lock on the main section at Limburg; those continuing to Diez will encounter two further locks before the extended endpoint.
What the day feels like
What the day feels like
After a short briefing, you push off from Runkel and settle into a steady rhythm: easy strokes, long sightlines and frequent opportunities to pause at small riverfront villages. The single lock early on is a brief, mechanical interlude amid long, soft-flowing sections of river; extend the outing to Diez if you want a longer day and additional lock passages.
