Set in a Brooklyn workshop, A Knife for the Hunt! walks you through the fundamentals of knifesmithing: heating steel, shaping with hammer and anvil, tempering the blade by quench, and refining the edge on a grinder. Over a compact, four-hour session you transform a rough 4140-steel preform into a finished Hunter knife and leave with a paracord-handled piece you made yourself.

THE PROCESS

From Blank to Blade

You’ll take a rough preform of 4140 steel and shape it into the profile you choose — clip point, drop point, or a blended design — turning raw stock into a distinct Hunter knife.

THE WORK

Heat, Hammer, Anvil

The first portion of the workshop focuses on heating steel in a propane forge and using hammer and anvil to create the knife’s profile — an active, rhythmic slog of red-hot metal and repeated strikes.

THE FINALE

Quench, Grind, Finish

After shaping, you harden the blade with an oil quench, then refine bevels on a grinder and finish the handle with paracord and final sharpening, leaving with a finished, functional knife.

What the day feels like

What the Workshop Feels Like

The workshop is compact and hands-on: expect deliberate bursts at the forge, repeated hammering to dial in shape, a dramatic oil quench, then patient grinding and finishing. Guides provide instruction and assistance so you focus on the physical craft and the design choices that make the knife yours.
