Outing Highlights

THE VENUE

Coronado Islands: clearer water and rich structure

The islands offer visibility often 10–20 feet better than coastal San Diego with varied structure from shallow reefs to deeper drops—ideal for practicing both target work and real hunting scenarios.

THE TEACHING

Small groups, certified instructors, focused improvement

Instruction comes from certified freediving instructors who keep group sizes tight (a maximum 3:1 student-to-instructor ratio) so you get personalized coaching on skills, safety and technique.

THE FLOW

From classroom theory to in-water drills and hunting

The course layers classroom instruction with practical boat-based coaching, in-water rescue and safety drills, target practice for loading and shooting, unloaded fish ID dives, and culminates in supervised hunting and catch care.

What the day feels like

What the day feels like

You’ll board the Escapade for a full day that blends on-deck teaching during the transit with progressive in-water work at the Coronado Islands: drills and unloaded dives transition into target practice and then supervised hunting, finishing with hands-on catch care at the filet table.

Suitability

Who it's for

Who this course suits—and who should consider alternatives.

1
Aspiring SpearosIdeal for students who already have a basic freediving certification and want focused, hands-on instruction to start hunting safely under close supervision.
2
New FreediversNot a good fit unless you first complete a Beginner Freediver Course; adding weapon handling without freediving comfort is overwhelming and unsafe.
3
Experienced FreediversA strong match for those with prior freediving experience who want to translate breath-hold skills into responsible spearfishing technique; the small instructor ratio supports rapid, individualized improvement.
4
Casual Sightseers or Non-swimmersNot suitable—participants must be comfortable in open water, able to kick long distances on the surface, and make smooth dives consistently.
