DENVER WORKSHOP FIELD GUIDE
Make an Optical-Illusion Plate: Hands-On Fused-Glass Workshop in Denver
Ages 13+ • 3 hours — a guided, hands-on fused-glass class where you design an 'optics' plate to be kiln-fired and retrieved after final firings.
Make an Optical-Illusion Plate: Hands-On Fused-Glass Workshop in Denver.
In a compact Denver studio, this three-hour class guides novices through the physics and craft of fused glass — how glass flows, expands and can be arranged to create the “balloon” effects and optical illusions that make a plate seem to move. You’ll choose colors, learn cutting and layout techniques, and assemble an optics plate (a finished piece just under about 8"x8") to be fired into a slumped, gently curved serving or display plate. No prior experience is required; the session is designed to be welcoming and hands-on.

Outing Highlights
A beginner-friendly entry to fused glass
This class is a low-pressure, do-able way to try fused glass: streamlined steps, patient instruction, and a clear project — an optics plate — that’s achievable in a single session of cutting, cleaning and laying out glass.
Hands-on technique without the overwhelm
Expect instructor demonstrations in cutting, breaking and laying out glass strips, plus guided explanation of what happens to glass in the kiln — enough technique to learn and apply, without needless complication.
A usable, one-of-a-kind optics plate
You leave the class having completed the assembly of your plate design — the studio furnishes colors and molds — and later collect the fired, slumped piece that functions as a display or serving plate.
What the day feels like
What the Class Feels Like
The session moves at a steady, practical pace: arrive and take in the rows of colorful glass, listen to a short instructor talk about how glass behaves in the kiln, watch demonstrations of cutting and layout, pick your strips, clean them, then arrange and glue them on edge to build an optics plate. It’s tactile, focused, and joyful — a craft-forward three hours that ends with a nearly finished piece ready for kiln firings.

Details to review before reserving
The class runs approximately 3 hours.
Bring reading glasses if you use them. Students may bring a water bottle; the studio also provides filtered water, coffee, tea and snacks.
You cannot take the finished plate the same day: artwork must go through two kiln firings of roughly a full day each before it becomes a completed plate for pickup.

Frequently asked questions
Planning Your Outing
Can I take my finished plate home after class?
No. Your artwork needs to go through two kiln-firings of approximately a full day each before it becomes an actual plate.
Can I bring my own design?
No, but you can decide in advance on colors that you might like to use in your plate.
Is this class suitable for beginners?
Yes! This class is beginner-friendly, though it offers enough depth for those looking to try something new.
Are we working with lead?
No! Fused glass does not use any lead. Other than sharp edges on the glass, it is completely safe.
Can someone watch me take the class?
Students are asked not to bring observers, as seating is limited and a full class ensures the experience is financially viable.
How big will the finished plate be?
Depending on which size you choose, plates will be either 8”x8” or 6”x6” in size.
What shape will the finished plate be?
Your artwork will be slumped into a 'sushi' mold and will have a soft, low, continuous-curved shape with slightly raised sides — not a flat plate with a raised rim.
