Outdoor Bliss at Gunter Hill Recreation Area

Had a reservation for 4 nights, was given a pass for that tome frame however I skipped a night or the website glitched. The front gate host weren't helpful much and had me move camp to another site. I understand the confusion and we all make mistakes however I found the male host to be rude and kinda arrogant and also felt watched from that point forward. I have never experienced that with other coe campgrounds. Or maybe he was having a hard day regardless we didn't appreciate it.

General Impression A beautiful, sprawling Army Corps of Engineers (COE) campground on the shores of the Alabama River. The park features two distinct vibes: the Catoma loop, with modern, spacious concrete sites, and the more rustic, wooded Antioch loop. There is plenty of nature to explore regardless of where you park. Site & Navigation We stayed in #9 (Catoma Loop). Navigation: The campground has 142 sites across multiple loops. Interior roads are about 1.5 lanes wide with no concerning overhead clearance issues. However, the Y-turns can be narrow for big rigs—be mindful of the ruts left behind by others during wet weather. Exterior roads leading into the park are wide and easy to navigate. Site Details: Our site was a roomy, level asphalt back-in with plenty of space between neighbors and beautiful surrounding woods. The park offers a mix of sites, with some large enough to accommodate two rigs, plus several pull-through options. Hookups: Catoma Loop sites offer full hookups (50/30 amp), while Antioch is partial hookups. Utilities are well-placed next to the pad. Amenities at Site: Included a picnic table, a separate grill, and a fire ring with a layover grill attachment. Connectivity & Utilities Connectivity: There is no park Wi-Fi. However, both our Verizon and Starlink performed well for streaming. Note: Tree coverage varies significantly by site, so check photos before booking if satellite or cellular signal is a priority. Service/Supplies: No on-site propane or laundry. There is a "Super Coin" laundry in Montgomery (~20 min) and a Tractor Supply in Millbrook (~30 min). Trash/Dump: Dumpsters are conveniently located near the dump station at the exit. Noise & Environment The park is generally quiet and enjoyable. You will hear occasional train noise outside the RV. Crucially, the campground is located across from a raceway. While it was quiet during our stay, the noise level—and traffic—would likely increase significantly on race weekends. Pro tip: Check the raceway calendar before booking. Amenities Facilities: Bathrooms are an older style but kept clean. Showers are individual rooms with a dressing area. Recreation: There is a newer playground near the bathhouse, a boat ramp, a multi-use court, and various hiking/biking trails. Pet-Friendliness: Very dog-friendly with plenty of space for walking, though no specific pet amenities. Please follow leash rules. There are trash cans around common areas for waste disposal. Shopping: There is a Dollar General nearby. It’s only 0.5 miles from the park entrance, but it’s actually 1.7 miles from the camping loops. It is bikeable, but further than it appears on a map. Logistics: The nearest Amazon locker is in Monchi, over an hour away, so plan your deliveries accordingly. Staff & Reservations Staff: Our check-in interaction was pleasant and friendly. Booking: All reservations are through Recreation.gov. If you have an "America the Beautiful" pass, ensure you add it to your profile to secure your discount. Cost & Value Rates: Prices are roughly $32 for FHU or $26 for PHU. Verdict: Even without the discount, this is a top-tier "Value Stay." We typically don't expect full hookups, asphalt pads, or upgraded bathrooms at this price point. When you add in the included grill and site space, it’s an incredible deal.

Nice and peaceful. Great view of the lake. Good for walking and biking. Long driveways and full hookups.

A nice park with long spaced out sites. A new dock at boat ramp. The Antioch loop is currently closed for renovations. The Catoma loop is nice but lacks maintenance. The accessible shower has parts missing with low pressure and the laundry room has 2 washers and 2 dryers, none of the machines work. Laundry room is not posted closed. Cell signal can be intermittent. 3 stars for lack of upkeep, 5 for the park itself.
