Mount Tallac is definitely not for the faint of heart! As someone from the East Coast who hikes regularly and runs frequently, I was a little caught off guard by just how challenging this hike was. If you’re planning to tackle the trail, **seriously overestimate how much water you’ll need.** We ran out about 7 miles into the 10-mile out-and-back, so come prepared, especially during the summer months. I’d also recommend getting to the trailhead around 5–6 AM in the summer. We started our hike at 6 AM and didn’t finish until around 1 PM. Also the parking lot fills up quickly, we were lucky to get a spot. We did stop several times along the way to take pictures and enjoy the views, which definitely added some time, but the views are absolutely worth the effort! The trail itself is well marked, and the necessary permits are available right at the trailhead, which was very convenient. Overall, I would definitely recommend Mount Tallac if you’re looking for a challenging hike close to South Lake Tahoe. Just make sure you’re prepared for a pretty intense hike, bring plenty of water, and give yourself plenty of time. The views at the top make every step worth it!
