About This Adventure Destination

Cattail Falls offers a refreshing break deep within the rugged landscape of Big Bend National Park, Texas. Located in the Chisos Mountains region, this hidden waterfall presents a striking contrast to the surrounding arid desert. Unlike much of Big Bend’s dry terrain, Cattail Falls features a series of cascading waters tumbling over ancient volcanic rock into a cool, clear pool below—a natural oasis in a harsh environment. The lush vegetation growing around the falls creates a small but vibrant micro-ecosystem, supporting various plant species that embrace the constant moisture.

This multi-tiered waterfall is a standout destination due to its serene atmosphere and the soothing sound of flowing water, making it ideal for visitors looking to step away from the park’s more trafficked areas. The falls flow through volcanic rock formations that date back millions of years, adding a fascinating geological backdrop to the scenery. Visitors often vary from casual hikers to those with a more adventurous spirit, appreciating the moderate but rewarding trek required to reach the falls.

Cattail Falls is also part of a delicate ecosystem within Big Bend National Park, where conservation is essential. Visitors are advised to carry out all trash and avoid disturbing native plants or wildlife. The area is remote, rarely crowded, and offers a peaceful encounter with nature that refreshes the mind and body. Whether seeking a cool swim or a quiet moment surrounded by the desert’s raw beauty, Cattail Falls is well worth the visit for those traveling in the Big Bend region.

What a hike! It was quite fun to go on a search for this trail. We had to park on a dirt road near Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, where the parking lot I read about was barricaded off. That increased our journey by quite a bit. All in all, we hiked almost 6 miles round trip. The day was fairly overcast and there were some great shaded sections, so it was not terribly hot (in mid-May). The scenery was well worth the hike, from the lower part of the park all the way into a canyon-type area, the environment changed quite a bit. Once you get to the trail head for the falls, there is a section to hike up that include some log steps - not the easiest thing for shorter legs, but doable. Most of the hike was easy to easy-moderate, except for the bit where you have to climb over and around large boulders to get to the falls. Once there, we were a little disappointed that the waterfall was more of a gentle trickle down the cliff face, but the area was like a little oasis to sit and enjoy. Glad we chose to make the hike!!

The hike is moderately strenuous when it’s hot, but mostly flat until the last mile or so.
