Trolltunga in April – an unforgettable off-season adventure Together with four friends, we started the climb to Trolltunga on a Wednesday morning at 6:00 am – an iconic viewpoint at an altitude of 1200 meters, with a total distance of about 29 kilometers. We did this in early April, outside the official hiking season, and that presented additional challenges. Since P3 was closed, we parked at P2. Please note that you must arrange parking costs and tolls in advance. The first 4.5 km (and over 400 meters of ascent) from P2 to the official starting point was a tough climb in itself. This section is not accessible by car without a guide, unless you go during the hiking season. From the entrance to the hike there was immediately a thick layer of snow. In the morning it was still hard, which made walking easier. Fortunately, the route is well marked with posts and distance signs. After a relatively flat start, a steep, slippery slope soon followed towards the highest point of the route (approx. 1200 meters), after which you descend again towards an emergency hut. This is followed by three more significant climbs and descents, including a dangerous passage with a narrow snow edge of only 40 cm wide, with a steep abyss next to it. Ice shoes are absolutely recommended here. The reward awaits at the end: the breathtaking view of Trolltunga. Unfortunately, the platform itself was closed due to slippery conditions, but the view remained impressive. The way back became harder because the sun had melted the snow. We sometimes sank as deep as 50 cm, which made it very tiring. In total we were on the road for about 10 hours. Tips: • A guide is not required out of season. Make sure you are well prepared. • Ensure good physical and mental condition. • Wear sturdy shoes, wear layers and bring ice shoes. • Don't forget sunscreen: the combination of snow and sun quickly causes sunburn. • Enough food and water are essential. A fantastic trip that should not be underestimated - but for those who go well prepared, an adventure you will never forget!
