About Northfield Mountain Forest

Northfield Mountain Forest is a multi-use recreational area in western Massachusetts known for its extensive trail network, scenic views, and proximity to the Connecticut River, offering year-round outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and paddle sports.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Northfield Mountain Forest features over 8,000 acres of forested terrain located primarily in Franklin County, Massachusetts, along the Connecticut River. The area includes Northfield Mountain, a 1,200-foot-high ridge that provides panoramic views of the surrounding river valley and Berkshire Hills. The forest comprises diverse forest types, including hardwoods like oak and maple as well as conifers, supporting abundant wildlife including deer, black bear, and numerous bird species. Historically, the site is notable for its pumped-storage hydroelectric facility operated by the utility company Eversource, which utilizes the mountain's elevation for energy storage. Despite this infrastructure, the area has extensive recreational opportunities, with more than 30 miles of multi-use trails maintained for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. The forest connects to the nearby Connecticut River and features access points for canoeing and kayaking. Northfield Mountain Forest is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking varied terrain and scenic overlooks. Visitors appreciate the combination of forested trails, rocky outcrops, and water-based recreation. The area is managed with emphasis on balancing energy production with public recreational use and habitat conservation. Its proximity to the Connecticut River Greenway and nearby towns makes it accessible and attractive for day trips or longer visits.
