Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Braddock Bay Bird Observatory (BBBO) is located adjacent to Braddock Bay along the southern shore of Lake Ontario, near Rochester, New York. It is a critical site for avian research, education, and conservation with a focus on migratory bird monitoring and coastal wetland protection. The area consists of diverse habitats including marshes, open fields, dense shrublands, and coastal shoreline, supporting a wide range of bird species throughout the year. BBBO conducts long-term bird banding and migration studies that contribute to understanding species population trends and habitat needs. As a hotspot for birdwatchers, it attracts spring and fall migrants such as warblers, hawks, rails, and waterfowl. In addition to bird monitoring, the observatory offers public programs, guided walks, and educational outreach promoting environmental stewardship. The marshes and bay areas are also important for amphibians, mammals, and native plant life. Visitors can explore multiple trails and observation points that allow up-close wildlife viewing with minimal disturbance to the ecosystem. The site plays an important conservation role in protecting coastal wetlands threatened by development, pollution, and invasive species. Braddock Bay Bird Observatory is managed by the Orleans County Department of Parks and Recreation in partnership with environmental groups, reflecting its role as a local and regional conservation asset. The site is accessible year-round, with peak visitation during migration seasons, providing an immersive outdoor experience for birders, naturalists, and families.
