Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Braddock Bay Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is situated in Monroe County on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, near the city of Rochester, New York. The preserve covers a large complex of marshes, ponds, open water, shrub swamps, and upland forests, providing critical habitat for numerous bird species and other wildlife. Established primarily to conserve aquatic and wetland environments, Braddock Bay serves as an important stopover for migratory waterfowl and shorebirds, making it a prime location for bird watching and seasonal hunting. The WMA features miles of trails and several boat launches designed for paddlers and anglers. Its wetlands support species such as great blue herons, red-winged blackbirds, Canada geese, and numerous duck species. Additionally, the area includes mixed hardwood forests and grasslands that host a variety of mammals and reptiles. Visitors to Braddock Bay can enjoy quiet hiking along well-maintained trails that pass through forest and wetland edge habitats, with several observation platforms and blinds for wildlife viewing. The WMA is managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), focusing on habitat quality and sustainable use. The proximity to Rochester makes it a popular spot for day trips and seasonal outdoor activities. Visitors should note that certain areas may be closed during hunting seasons or for habitat restoration efforts. Braddock Bay WMA provides an accessible natural refuge that balances conservation efforts with recreational use, inviting visitors to experience the unique ecosystems of Lake Ontario’s shore.
