The Maugherow Peninsula Special Protection Area (SPA) is located on the northern coast of County Sligo, in the northwest of Ireland. This area is characterized by its rugged coastline, sandy beaches, salt marshes, dunes, and farmland. The SPA is particularly recognized for its importance as a breeding and wintering site for a variety of rare and protected bird species, including barnacle geese, whooper swans, and several other waterfowl and waders. Geographically, the peninsula juts into the Atlantic Ocean, featuring diverse coastal habitats shaped by both marine and terrestrial influences. Ecologically, the SPA supports a mosaic of habitats from open agricultural fields and grazing pastures to wetland and tidal areas that sustain rich biodiversity. Historically, the Maugherow Peninsula has been sparsely populated and largely agricultural, preserving much of its natural character and traditional land use practices.Anglers and wildlife watchers frequent the area, with the coastal waters offering fishing opportunities and the shoreline providing excellent vantage points for birdwatching. Notable landmarks include the Salvage Pier and the pristine beaches such as Rosses Point nearby. Visitors appreciate the quiet, unspoiled environment and the chance to spot rare bird species in their natural setting. The SPA status helps safeguard the habitats, making the peninsula an important destination for conservation-minded travelers and nature lovers alike.
