About Pebblebed Heaths

Pebblebed Heaths is a vast area of lowland heath in Devon, England, renowned for its rare heathland habitats and rich biodiversity, offering visitors a unique outdoor experience with walking, wildlife viewing, and cycling opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Pebblebed Heaths is a significant expanse of lowland heath covering approximately 3,500 hectares in East Devon, located between the towns of Exeter and the Jurassic Coast. It is one of the largest remaining lowland heathlands in Britain and is internationally recognized for its ecological importance. The area features a mosaic of heath, grassland, woodland, and wetland habitats with a sandy pebble soil base that supports rare flora and fauna. It has been designated a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Historically, the Pebblebed Heaths were used for military training and small-scale farming, which helped maintain the open heathland environment. Today, it is managed collaboratively by the East Devon Pebblebed Heaths Conservation Trust, Forestry England, and the Clinton Devon Estates to preserve its unique ecology.

Outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy miles of well-maintained walking and cycling paths that wind through diverse landscapes. Birdwatching is popular here, with species such as nightjars, Dartford warblers, and Eurasian curlews commonly spotted. The heathland also supports reptiles like the rare smooth snake and sand lizard. Visitors appreciate the peaceful, natural setting and the ability to explore varied terrains.

The Pebblebed Heaths hold cultural value with scattered ancient archaeological sites, as well as railway remnants from the old agricultural and peat extraction industries. The area appeals to families, wildlife watchers, and outdoor adventurers seeking a tranquil heathland environment close to Devon’s coastline and countryside.
