About Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority

The Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority safeguards extensive natural habitat in the hills of eastern Los Angeles County, offering hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities in a rare urban-adjacent preserve.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority (PHHPA) manages over 3,700 acres of protected open space throughout the Puente Hills in eastern Los Angeles County, California. This area serves as one of Southern California's largest urban natural habitat preserves, providing critical refuge for both native plant and animal species in an otherwise highly developed region. The landscape primarily consists of chaparral, oak woodland, grasslands, and riparian areas located within rolling hills and deep canyons. Historically, ranching and oil drilling shaped portions of the terrain before efforts to protect it began in the late 1990s and early 2000s. PHHPA’s mission includes habitat restoration, endangered species protection (including the threatened coastal California gnatcatcher and other local wildlife), as well as providing educational and passive recreation opportunities. Visitors can enjoy over 30 miles of hiking and multi-use trails across multiple preserves, including the prominent Turnbull Canyon and Hellman Wilderness. These trails offer scenic hilltop views, wildflower displays in spring, and encounters with native wildlife such as bobcats, coyotes, and countless bird species. The area is popular with hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers, although mountain biking is allowed only in designated zones. PHHPA continues to work with local municipalities and volunteers to expand habitat linkages, reduce the impact of invasive species, and maintain visitor access. The preserve’s proximity to the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area makes it an accessible natural escape for outdoor enthusiasts seeking wildlife observation and physical activity away from urban noise.
