About Sheboygan Marsh Wildlife Area

Sheboygan Marsh Wildlife Area is a vital wetland complex along the western shore of Lake Michigan, offering rich opportunities for birdwatching, hunting, and fishing in a dynamic marsh and floodplain ecosystem.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Sheboygan Marsh Wildlife Area spans approximately 7,100 acres along the Sheboygan River and Lake Michigan in eastern Wisconsin. This protected area is characterized by extensive wetlands, including marshes, sedge meadows, shrub-carr, and floodplain forest habitats. The area's hydrology is shaped by both the river and seasonal lake level fluctuations, creating complex aquatic ecosystems vital for fish, migratory waterfowl, amphibians, and other wildlife. The marsh is especially renowned for its populations of waterfowl such as ducks and geese, making it a premier site for birdwatching and regulated waterfowl hunting. In addition to supporting diverse bird species, the Sheboygan Marsh provides spawning and nursery habitat for fish like northern pike, smallmouth bass, and panfish, attracting anglers year-round. The Wildlife Area is managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and has been actively restored for wetland health, including invasive species control and water level management to enhance habitat quality. Visitors can enjoy hiking and wildlife viewing along designated trails and observation platforms. Winter activities include ice fishing and snowshoeing. While no developed campgrounds exist within the marsh itself, nearby public lands provide camping options. The proximity to Sheboygan city allows convenient access for residents and tourists. Overall, Sheboygan Marsh Wildlife Area offers an immersive natural experience focused on wetland ecosystems and active wildlife recreation through all seasons.
