The Taygetos Mountain Range Natura 2000 Site encompasses the highest mountain range in the Peloponnese region of southern Greece, rising to an elevation of 2,407 meters at its summit, Profitis Ilias. This protected area is recognized under the European Union’s Natura 2000 network due to its exceptional ecological value, housing numerous rare and endemic plant species, diverse Mediterranean forest habitats, and important wildlife populations. The range's steep slopes and deep gorges create a dramatic and varied landscape, with mixed fir, pine, and oak forests dominating the mid-elevations, while alpine and subalpine environments are found at higher altitudes. The site plays a key role in conserving species such as the Balkan chamois, golden eagle, and several protected orchid species. Historically, Taygetos has held cultural significance since ancient times, including its proximity to the ancient city of Sparta.
