Kinabalu Park, established in 1964 in the Malaysian state of Sabah on the island of Borneo, spans approximately 754 square kilometers of forested mountain slopes and alpine meadow. The park is dominated by Mount Kinabalu, rising 4,095 meters (13,435 feet) above sea level, making it the tallest peak between the Himalayas and New Guinea. This elevation gradient creates diverse habitats ranging from tropical lowland forest to alpine soils, supporting over 5,000 plant species and a rich array of wildlife including the rare orangutan, Bornean gibbon, and various endemic orchids and rhododendrons. Kinabalu Park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 due to its outstanding universal value for conservation and biodiversity. The park's well-maintained network of hiking trails leads visitors through rainforest, montane forest, and sub-alpine meadows, culminating in the challenging summit climb of Mount Kinabalu. The summit ascent requires a permit and guide, drawing hikers worldwide. Aside from climbing, visitors enjoy birdwatching, botanical tours, and cultural experiences with local Dusun communities. The park's facilities include a botanical garden and visitor center near the headquarters in Kundasang, providing educational displays about the region’s natural heritage.
